The microphones they wear are so sensible that it's not uncommon to know when a director is talking to the hosts through their earpieces even though we can't understand what they're saying. I've heard that several times.
And sometimes but almost never, we can hear what they're saying to the hosts. Take the following video sequence for instance. Renee was instructed to reach for a product but she didn't know exactly where it was.
If you listen very carefully with good headphones, good concentration, good volume and no noise, you'll be able to hear a director saying "far right" to Renee through her earpiece.
